"The, average young girl in Chi cago is physically unfit for mother hood. Life in a big city is too stren uous, and as a consequencethe ma terial of womanhood is decidedly dis couraging." Dr. Caroline Hedger of the Women's Trade Union League. "I agree with Dr. Hedger, some what. The average working girl may be physically unfit. But she is made physically unfit by the struggle for existence, by being deprived of littleN comforts that make life worth while." Mrs. Virginia Brooks Washburne. Two earnest Chicago women, 'both, of whom have done their share in bettering conditions, have tackled one of the vital questions of the day the question of maternity among the poor. Several hundred women were told some unpleasant but pathological truths by Dr. Hedger at the Coonley School, Belle Plaine avenue-and North Leavitf st. The meeting was the first of mothers and fathers that has been ar ranged by Mrs' -Ella Plagg' Young for the purpose of discussing the sex hygiene problem.
