Speculation was rife as to the
amount with; which it had been at
tempted to bribe me. Some guessers
went as high as $100,000.
"Have you thought over this mat
ter and are you fully prepared to
answer?" asked the grim old -Judge,
scanning my tear-swoHen face.
I nodded.
"Miss Dillpickles, I will ask you to
state to the court," said the district
attorney with a triumphant look at
Mr. Mockorange, "what did the de
fendant, Mockorange, say to yW
when he spoke to you in the rear of
this courtroom last Tuesday?"
In a low tone, I answered. Ohit
was hard, but I answered. Everyone
leaned forward to hear. In spite of
being the chief witness against him,
I stated, Mr. Mockorange had not
spoken to me on any subject what
ever since I' left the trust's employ
until that day. On that occasion he
signified that he wished to speak to
me and led me -out of earshot of
others. Then
"Then what?" snapped the district
attorney. "And speak louder."
"He then said," I went on "Miss
Dillpickles, there's a little . white
string hanging out back " of your
shirtwaist!" -. ' .

apologizes," said the judge in a' chok
ing voice.

DIARY OF FATHER TIME
The beauty of nature, of natural
scenery amid mountains, fields and
lakes, seems to have passed unheeded
in early times. The present enthus
iasm which" leads thousands of tour
ists to California, Florida, Switzer
land and other natural beauty spots
is quite a modern development' of
what is almost a new sense in man.
While it is impossible to fix the exact
date of its beginning, it can be traced
back to the time of the Italian resur
rection in the fourteenth century,

edly speaks of nature.
Among the ancients, for example,
art and poetry went through the
whole circle of human interests be
fore they turned to the representa
tion of nature. The ascent of a moun
tain was unheard, of until Patrarch
climbed Mont Ventoux, near Avignon,
and achieved the noblest masterpiece
of description of natural scenery.
And then enjoyment of the external
world came into existence an found
expression in many poems and paint
ings, the reading and seeing of which
have caused thousands to break away
from' their narrow environs so that
they might enjoy more distant views
and broaden their minds.
