It follows: "Whereas, Mendel Beilis, a Jew, is now on trial in Russia for the mur der of a Christian boy, Andrew Yushinski; and "Whereas, The Russian govern ment has deemed it proper to accuse said Beilis of having committed the murder in order to obtain the boy's blood for ritualistic purposes; and "Whereas, Such alleged usfe" of blood is undeniably and absolutely contrary to the spirit and letter of the Jewish religion and has been so proven by non-Jewish theologians, scientists -and historians; and "Whereas, We, ourselves, being members of the Jewish race, know by precept, example and personal know ledge, that no such ceremony as so called blood ritual was ever prescrib ed by our religion; and "Whereas, Such accusations, ab surd and groundless as it may seem to us, yet amounts to a charge of cannibalism preferred against the en tire race of civilized, intelligent and educated men and women; and "Whereas, Over 6,000,000 Jews now residing in Russia are exposed to public shame and danger by be ing accused of practicing such un human rite as the blood ritual; and "Whereas,. The great number of American citizens of the Jewish re ligion are greatly distressed and mor tified by such attack made on the morality of this faith; and "Whereas, Even the Antisemitic and conservative press of Russia has abstained from approving the stand of the prosecution in the Beilis case, and has assailed the charge of blood ritual as barbarous, absurd and ma licious and accuses the high govern ment authorities responsible for with holding all evidence favorable to the accused; and "Whereas, The leaders of the, Jew ish people in Russia from all reports fear that the populace may be incited to fresh outrages and pogroms as a result of the exqitement induced by the superstitious and slanderous charge made against said Beilis and by virtue of that against the entire Jewish race; therefore be it "Resolved, That we members of the Ideal Lodge, No. 287, Independent Western Star Order, in special meet ing assembled, do hereby express our indignation and voice our protest against the use of so barbaric an ac cusation against an industrious and law-abiding race which may result in certain parts of Russia in certain vio lence of person and destruction of property; and be it further "Resolved, That this resolution be spread on our minutes and official copies thereof be forwarded to the Chicago press, Grand Cbdge, I.
