ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE
FELIX DIAZ FAILS
1 Im'AfV'
Felix Diaz.
' Havana, Nov. 7. Though- rumors
are afloat to the effect that the knife
used by the assassin who cut Gen.
Felix Diaz, Mexican refugee, twice in
the neck, was poisoned, there is noth
ing in Diaz' condition to indicate this,
and it is believed the cuts will soon
heal.
The attempt to assassinate Diaz
was very spectacular. He was sit
ting, with Luis Malba, manager of the
Mexico City street railways, and Ce
celio Ocon, who fled with him from
Vera Cruz, on a bench in the Mala
con, listening to a band concert,
when five Mexicans attacked him
without warning.
The man with the knife shot at
Diaz, but his bullet wounded a com
panion. Though Diaz was armed, he
did not attempt to use his gun, but
defended himself with his umbrella.
Diaz and his companions, the
wounded Mexican and Harry Berlin
er, a New-York salesman who came
to Diaz' rescue, were arrested.
ATTEMPT ON HUERTA'S LE
San Francisco, Cal., Nov. 7. A

an attempt was made yesterday to
assassinate Provisional President
Huerta of Mexico. The report states
that while Huerta was out driving a
man ran in front of 'the carriage,
seized the horse's heads, and flour
ished an automatic revolver. The
horses, frightened, reared and struck
the man with their hoofs, fatally in
juring him.
LIND AFTER HUERTA
Washington, Nov. 7. President
Huerta is to be subjected to renewed
pressure to. force him to relinquish
control of national affairs in Mexico.
It is declared that John Lind, who
left Vera Cruz last night to be gone
several days, is acting under instruc
tions from President Wilson, who or
dered him to tell influential Mexican
bankers just why this government
opposed Huertaism. It is also under
stood Lind will endeavor to under
mine Huerta with certain of his prin
cipal supporters.
