HQT AFTER DEPARTMENT STORE MASHERS Eleven men were arrested yester day in the waiting room of a depart ment store on Sixth avenue, New York City. Three of them commenc ed serving terms in the workhouse today and the other eight will be sentenced today for "mashing." This evil, which exists inside and outside of department stores in all of the big cities, has been brought to the" attention of the police of New York City and a determined effort is being made there to abolish it. It is believed that many of these men are agents of the "white slave" ring and that many girls are lured to their ruin through these decoys. Not only young women waiting in the restrooms but the clerks in the stores have been approached by these loungers, who are usually well dress ed,, and apparently well educated. The raid in New York was planned with the utmost care. Four salesgirls volunteered to aid the city detectives. In addition, several women detectives and the matron from one of the po lice stations went to the store. The salesgirls went to the waiting room and within a short time the young men who were suspected had approached fhem. When the entire eleven were engaged, in conversation with the girls and women, Detective Costigan's men swooped down and bundled the suspected slayers into a patrol wagon. Those not Immediate ly sentenced were released on $1,0Q0 bail, but the police have started a thorough investigation into their rec ords to learn whether they are work ing in connection with 'any of the "white slave" rings known to be operating in the city. In, Chicago jt is a common, thing to find autos outside the exits through which the girl employes leave the stores and men lounging beside the cars frequently address the girls and ask them if they want a ride.
