find the baggage of the newlyweds
of any other country done up in white
ribbons and plastered with jokes
more or less vulgar. It almost seems
as though we as a people were
ashamed of loving and considered
marriage the greatest of jokes.
(To Be Continued Tomorrow.)
That modern chivalry bears a
price-tag marked "spooning" is the
accusation made by the girls who
wrote letters published previously.
And now one young man comes
back in this way:
"The spook of spoonddm hath
"Why won't the girls be scared
enough to tell the truth? Some girls
can't talk about a thing that interests
a man. And as for listening, a fellow
might as well talk to a stump. Then,
of course, he just naturally gets
"Ami that's only what the girl ex
pects! ' But she pretends to feel so
I've a score of letters of the same
tenor. Of course, this was Adam's
argument, and man's inherited chiv
alry has never restrained him from
using it, but not even a militant suf
fraget will discuss "woman-the-temp-ter"
However, this man's opening sen
tence, written in jest, contains the
prophecy of a brand new social ques
tion. It is a problem bound to puzzle
the best brains ot the-lawmakers, and
the preachers and the doctors in this
country before long!
For spooning is a ghost which has
already arisen! It Is haunting many
an unhappy girl today; it is the black
shadow which follows behind many
a remorseful man.
Reformers trying to regulate mu
nicipal amusements find spooning
their greatest obstacle. ' Mwood V.
Street, secretary of the Cleveland
Federation for Charity and Philan
thropy, in a recent newspaper article,
said that half the unmarried mothers
in maternity homes give spooning as
the first cause of all their wretched
ness. And according to Rose Living-
ston, New York's little crusader,
spooning is the white slaver's first
snatch at his victim.
Spooning has got to be reckoned
with, some day, as a big factor in the
social uplift of every community.
Meanwhilr the girls who question
man's right 1 5 claim a kiss- as a fee
for his company must fight the first
battle in this great campaign un
aided. Writes a little stenographer to me,
with wisdom beyond her years:
"There is no such thing as 'inno
cent' spooning, unless in -cases of
very unsophisticated girls girls
whom it is any. real man's duty to
And a business woman makes this
"Spooning in its very essence is en
tirely different from the love-making
which precedes marriage. With the
latter comes the understanding of
two persons mated spiritually, men
tally and physically, instead of mere
physical attraction alone. Is there
nothing which will make a 'spoony'
girl recognize before it is too late, the
folly of her simple little soul?"
This newest of social problems
based on a very old sex-tangle is
purely an American problem, as more
than one of my-correspondents has
pointed out.
"Spooning is without question the
result of phases quite peculiar to
American life and customs," writes
a well-known musician who has
studied much abroad. "In this coun
try susceptible young people are
everywhere entertained with songs,
