DAILY COMMENT ON PEOPLE AND THINGS
That husband Mme. Ernestine
Schumann-Heinck divorced was only
her third.
"If at first you don't succeed, try,
try again."
Did you notice the story the other
day about how some telephone girls
stuck to their post when in actual'
danger of fire?
That reminds me of the story of
the prize mutt Casabianca, the boy
whp stood on the burning deck,
whence all but him had fled.
You will remember the kid's dad
told him to stick there until he told
him to do something else.
And the gallant lad obeyed his
father, but lost his life.
Like one of those surgical opera
tions that was eminently successful,
but the patient died.
Poor little Casabianca had been
raised wrong. They had poured his
ear full of that stuff about obeying
no matter what the result.
And when I read about "L" station
agents getting murdered trying to
protect the company's coin, and tele
phone girls standing by their guns at
the risk of their lives well,
Then I think of little Cassie, who's
been a long time dead.
And he didn't even save any
money by standing on the burning
deck.
Moral In case of fire save your
life and let the money burn.
Cleveland is all fussed up over
what time to adopt, Eastern or
Standard.
Somebody wants to save an hour
of daylight.
But there's only one time all of us
can agree on ragtime.
No, none of the children of the
men who own the stock in Michigan's
copper mines was in that fire.
Most of them go to private schools
or collegesnear Boston.
It took three eminent members of
the bar to convince Pres. McCormick
that one member was a majority of
a board of 14.

member was a majority if the news- m
papers were behind him.
Inter-6sh brags that investigators
of United Charities break 10-hour
law, so hard do they work.
Now, ain't that just what we've
been saying? The investigators do
all the work that's done by the U. C.
Unless, maybe, the clerks that
keep the records after the investi
gators have discovered why they
shouldn't do anything at all for the
"unworthy" poor.
The one real snap in the U. C.
game must be the cashier's job.
Prof. Henderson, the swell little
press agent for the U. C, ought to
curb the ambition of those U. C.
investigators.
We always did" object to their
working so hard. Let the fellow that
hands out the coin get a littleTexer
cise. SOCIALISTS TO PROTEST
Frederick Lanfersiek, secretary of
the National Socialist party, this
afternoon sent out an appeal for a
series of mass meetings all over the
country on Dec. 28 to protest against
conditions at Calumet, Mich., and to
frame a demand for federal investi
gation. The mass meetings will be
held in conjunction with children's
day exercises and will be open to A

Lanfersiek sent a telegram to Pres
Wilson today asking for an investi
gation of the Calumet copper strike.
The Socialists expect to ask Con
gressman Clyde Tavenner of Illi
nois, a Democrat, to introduce a reso
lution calling for an investigation. '

Beer drinking dogs are still quite
common in Germany says writer.
Waddeyer mean? The dogs are quite
common or the beer drinkers are
dogs?
