GUILTY, OR SLANDERED
Biddy is guilty. The poor patient old hens, and the young ones, too, for
that matter, are held up to scorn and ridicule before the nation yea, the
whole world, and blamed for the high cost of eggs. Just in the same way
as financially irresponsible and overworked employes of railroads are
blamed for deaths in disasters, so are the feathered friends of the house
wife now branded with the crime of neglecting to provide .
And there's not one hen in all the nation that can come to the front
and deny the charge. Nor can their liege lords, the roosters, rush to their
aid in this, their hour of affliction. All their cackling, and crowing will avail
them not. Point as they may to the millions of embryonic chicks held in
frozen silence in cold storage warehouses, it will bring them naught. They
are in contempt and though they sit on their nests and lay even unto their
last egg, 'twould not clear them of the official condemnation of national
