GOMPERS AND OTHER UNION MEN GO ON TRIAL Indianapolis, Jan. 30. Samuel Gompers and the executive council of the American Federation of Labor were placed on trial hefore the United Mine Workers' convention. Duncan McDonald, Socialist delegate of Illi nois, charged that Gompers and the executive council of the -A. P. of L. were "booze" fighters, reactionary, fossilized and dead. Gompers said it was a lie and that eight of the eleven members were total abstainers. He said he himself "took a glass of beer when the daVs work was over." McDonald charged that the A. P. of L. was in control of a machine and. that Socialists were barred from holding responsible, effective offices in the organization. Answering the charge of Charles H. Moyer, president of the Western Federation of Miners, that Gompers and his associates failed properly to co-operate toward the relief of the Michigan copper strikers, Gompers asserted that they had done all with in, their power, but that the affiliated unions could not afford to be assessed specially for the Coppermine strikers. o o 4 THe 'cqat fife ; GET THE HABIT! Julia Flake, accused as an accessory of the murder of her mother, Mrs. Robert Higgins, and for which crime her stepfather, Robert Higgins, is now in jail at Aledo, was taken by Assistant State's Attorney James A. Allen of Aledo to the girl's state industrial school at Geneva today. Her going there was at her own request, as she wished to be away from the city in which Higgins is incarcerated and to be where she was not constantly ask ed about the crime.
