Dayton a, Fla., March 11. "Yes, I
stole niy own baby girl and I would
do it again, because I had fought for
her in the courts until I .was desper
ate and my mother's love was so
great that I could bear to be sepa
rated from her no longer," said the
beautiful Mrs. Newton C. Fassett, so
ciety leader and wife of a, wealthy
Spokane, Wash., manufacturing
chemist. Fassett is the son of former
Congressman J. Sloat Fassett of New
York.
"I divorced Edward McCallie" of
Chattanooga, Tenn.; two years ago,
after the former Cornell football star
had failed to support me. At that
time I was granted the custody of my
baby boy, while McCallie ,was given
the custody of Katherine, who was
then but 3 years old.
"I was desperate, for, oh! I did
want my little girl so badly, so I re
solved to take the law into my own
hands and steal my baby. I went to
Orlando, Fla., and, entering my form
er father-in-law's home, I took little
Katherine and smuggled her into a
huge racing car.
"The McCallies raised the country
side, and sheriff's posses were sent
in pursuit, and police officers in every
