Unless when he's fleeing before some enemy the jerboa walks on his hind legs and uses his forelegs as hands. When he's tired he untwists his tail and uses it as a prop for his back. N The seeker for information about April Fool.'s day and its origin is likely to be finely April-Fooled himself, as history and legend offer different rea- friends on April First. History points to the changes made in the lunar calendar by Pope Greg ory in the 16th century as the reason for the nonsensical antics practiced on April First. The Gregorian calen dar set NewTear's day back from April to Jan 1, same as it had been in the Julian calendar in Caesar's time. ' New Year's, then as now, was a season of present-giving. It was a great disappointment to people, es pecially the servants and dependants of royalty not to reecive gifts April 1 as well as Janl. It was then, so some historians tell us, that the distressed gift-givers bethought them of pre senting their relatives and depend ants with mock-presents, making the old New Year's day a comic duplicate of the real New Year's. Out of the disappointed expecta tions of the servants and hangers-on of the feudal lords of the 16th cen tury have grown the antics 20th cen tury people play today. o o A GOOD ACTOR Mrs. Hunt (a popular and prosper ous pauper) Now, Albert, what'U yer say when I take yer into the kind lady's drorin'-room?
