Investigations Show That Terrible Drug, Habit Has

Says One Investigator,
.The dope habit is spreading in Chi
cago, according to investigators who
have recently probed the city..
!s a result of alarming discoveries
made by probers in the employ of
Mrs..'V. T& Vanderbilt, who is putting
up much?money to fight the spread of
the drugevil, and othef investigators
it is expected that Aid. Charles E.
Merriam will present a resolution to
the City Council.
It is asserted that in the fashionable
districts .on the" tar North Side and
South Side there are elaborately fur
nished apartments wherein wealthy
users of dope come to indulge in the
practice. In the amdunC of dope used
these places are said to rival "the no
torious Chinese hop joints that' lined
South Clark street in the old days be
fore reform swooped down upon Chi
cago. One investigation was made by
William M. Blake, secretary of the
Business Mens Morals Association;
JHe found that several drug stores
were "dispensing dope uuvarfous dis
