Another American actress has cap
tured an heir to a name and fortune.
This time it is Josephine Brown, who
has become the bride of John Peuer
heerd, grandson and heir of Duke
Ferdinand, a multi-miUionaire who is
called "the grand old man of Portu
gal." Since the downfall of King Manuel,
Feuerheesd has become a British
subject, but he is a royalist. In the
event of a restoration, he would fol
low Manuel from his court at Rich
mond, England to Lisbon, where he
would assume his title.
Business men of Hyde Park accuse
the Illinois Central of being in ca
hoots with the liquor interests. Ac
cording to the accusation, the I. C.
aided the liquor interests in opening
a saloon at 55th street and Lake Park
avenue, which is local option. terri
tory, and in exchange the liquor in
terests helped the I. C. td block the
extension of a street car line,
Clyde TL Bates, whom thcbusiness
men say is an agent of the brewer
ies, appears as the petitioner for the
saloon. To get a license it is neces
sary to have the consent of owners of
majority 6f the property within a
legal radius. In this case the I. C. is
the owner of the majority of the
property and they have approved of
the opening of the saloon.
The business men, headed by Chas.
O. Peterson, charge that Bates aided
the L C. in blocking the extension of
the City Railway lines in Lake Park
avenue from 47fh to 55th streets..
They have appealed to Mayor Har
rison. He has instructed the corpora
tion counsel's office to investigate the
