- War's first demand is his victim's
Ardor and vigor and zeal and vim
Are offerings always dear to him;
Tis a bitter truth the tongue employs
When we use the phrase, "our soldier
He whom you purchased at risk of
life of your life and breath of your
Center of joys, of hopes and of fears,
Toiled for and saved for jfcu. through.
A puff of smoke and a jet of flame
And your boy is a memory, just a
Gone, ere he tasted life's fullest joys,
To the ranks of the SILENT SOL
Alas for the waste since the world
Through slaying of man by his
The maids unwed and the babes un
born The nations of strength and vigor
Who shall count all the age-long cost
Through the piled-up thought and
deed we've lost?
"'For the fittest and strongest grim
The eager, the bright young soldier
Saddest of 'all, In their guileless youth
