CARANZA TO BUTT IN ON THE f
MEDIATION PLANS
'Washington, May 22. Constitu
tionalist junta declined to discuss
Carranza's action in designating Jose
Vasconcelos to proceed to Niagara
Falls and find out to what extent the
mediators plan to deal with the paci
fication of Mexico.
El Paso. With evacuation of Sal
tillo by Mexican Federals, military ac
tivity in the Republic will be trans
ferred to South Central Mexico and
all constitutionalist forces will begin
at once to converge on Mexico City
itself.
It is not believed that the federals
will attempt to make a stand at San
Luis Potosi which is alreaedy besieg
ed by Gen. Alberto Carera Torres and
General Eulalio Gutierrez.
Laredo, Tex. The ebody of Por
firio Laurel, American ranchman,
captured and executed by Mexican
federals near Nuevo Laredo last No
vember, was brought to this city from
Nuevo Laredo.
BECKER CASE WITH JURY TODAY
New York, May 22. Whether
Charles Becker will go to the electric
chair for the murder of Gambler Her
man Rosenthal or will be freed "with
the apologies of the community," as
his counsel put it, probably will be
decided before night by the verdict of
the jury which for seventeen days
has heard evidence and argument in
the famous case.
Four men, the gunmen who slew,
have died for the murder of Rosen
thal. Becker, who the state says
plotted and forced the crime, is in the
shadow of the chair and it is possi
ble that a fifth life may be exacted,
as Dis't Att'y Whitman in summing
up intimated his intention to try
Jacob Reich, alias Jack Sullivan, as
a principal in the murder, if Becker
is convicted.
