Surely in this vast devastation of
brains, of mind and body, for preach
ers and doctors do not manage them
selves any better than the rest, it is a
sign of public incompetency that a
group of preachers may get together
and acclaim the institution that sup
ports them in the face of its down
right failure to show results.
The public complacently overlooks
the discrepancy and continues to sup
port the institution without regard to
its efficiency while its members men
tion each other's names "reverently"
and praise Chicago, in preparation of
a new contribution from its people.
Parker H. Sercombe.
Editor Day Book: "Teachers must
have their degree in California," says
a morning paper.
My comment would be: Yes, pro
vided that at public expense the de
gree called for can be attained. No
college or university degree should be
demanded of any public school teach
er if there be no opportunity to attain
that degree at public expense.
If the public school teacher must
attend any college or university that
demands tuition fees in order to get
the demanded degree, then what right
has a public school board to demand
of public school teachers such" college
or university degree? And if there be
no public college or university in the
U. S., then no public school teacher
should be obliged to take private
school work to get public school posi
tions. .
Is it not time state" universities had
free extension courses into our large
cities, so these college and university
degrees might be attained at public
Should not these extension courses
be in the evening and for adults only
who knbw enough to conserve their
time and who won't listen to "cheap"
or poor pedagogues, and who have
better or more brain capacity devel
oped to adapt and use this new up-to-date
knowledge than has the ex
clusive "four-walled" trained boy and
Have just-learned that the prin
cipals of the public schools, high and
elementary, and the high school
teachers of the city are required to
have a college or university degree,
and am told that there is no college
or university degree to be had at pub
lic expense in the United States. All
the degree giving institutions have
tuition fees. Now that the women
have the vote in Illinois why don't
they capture the University of Illinois
trusteeships and establish extension
degree giving courses in Chicago at
public expense.
Wonder if degree giving' institu
tions are getting short of students
and are out over the country influ
encing the Boards of Education to
compel public school teachers to have
degrees? Dr. Frances Dickinson.
"Why don't you try outdoor exer

"Oh, I have already started I do
all my knitting in the back yard!"
