TODAY'S HEALTHOGRAM
It is not necessary to know the
ultimate cause of cancer in order to
control the death rate from it. Many
of the conditions under which the
disease develops may be remedied by
increasing the knowledge of cancer.
Campaigns of education have as their
object the spreading of information
about -the disease. The American So
ciety for the Control of Cancer has
recently been formed to encourage
and direct this kind of educational
activity. " The society plans to co
operate with all existing agencies en
gaged in studying the disease, and to
bpblish in every city, town and cillage
the message of hope which lies lit the
early recognition and proper treat
ment of cancer.
WHATCHAMEAN "BLACKGUARD!"
In his very best days the black
guard was not a very pleasant fellow
to know, but at least his character
was above suspicion.
Many years ago in the great houses
of England a man servant was kept
to guard the fires in the grates and
take care of the fuel. Naturally, this
guard's face was black with soot, and
so he was called the black guard.
Having a black face, it was believed
he had a black character, too, and
blackguard became the designation of
a rogue rather than a servant.
MORE OF CAESAR
They say 2,000 years ago
'Twas in the early day
The Romans had hot water pipes
To take the chill away.
It would have made us laugh and
laugh
Until our sides were weak,
Could we have heard old Caesar yell:
"Th' bath has sprung a leak!"

EASY PICKINGS
"It seems to me the ideal place to
raise poultry would be in a railroad
depot."
"But what would you feed them?"
"Why, the rice that's thrown at
bridal pairs, silly."
