Ballot War Waged In Pacific Northwest by Big Business
and Standpatters to Defeat Seven Bills En- t
dorsed by Labor and Farmers.
Seattle, Wash., July 10. A battle
royal, precipitated by he ''Seven Sis
ters," Is being waged in the State of
Washington. The November elec
tion will determine the winner.
The "Seven Sisters" are seven
initiative bills proposed by a joint
committee representing the State
Federation of Labor, the State
Grange, the Fanners' Union, and the
Direct Legislation League of .Wash
ington. The nickname was given-the
bills by the standpatters who .are
fighting them, bujtthebackers of ihe
initiative measures were favorably
impressed with the name and gladly
adopted it themselves.
These hills provide the following:
1. Amendment of the workmen's
compensation act to provide "first
aid" for injured. This means that
when a worker is hurt, the employer
is required to furnish hospital and
medical treatment up to an amount
of $100, in addition to paying into the
state industrial insurance fund a reg
ular monthly contribution to com
pensate workmen for injuries sustained.
