large measure, the representatives of the people and use the machinery of
government to serve their own selfish ends.
I say the people of this republic MUST find a way to take that power out
of the hands of the selfish, sodden-souled few and restore it to the people
themselves and make our government In fact as well as in theory a gov
ernment of the people, by the people and for the people.
And I say that no power except THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE s
powerful enough at this stage of the game to recover this lost republic and
restore it to the people as a REAL democracy.
I know why the FOOD TRUST magnates are scared. They are smart
men. They UNDERSTAND. They know that things will go on as they
have been going on so long as the people are split up into warring factions
by parties; creeds and other institutions that make for differences of opinion.
They know that things will be all right for THEM so long as the people
are fools enough to be led around by the nose by political bosses or other
bosses and false leaders.
And they know that once the people understand how they are beings ex
ploited, begin TO THINK TOGETHER and become of one mind on any one
subject, then the people are going to have THEIR way about it.

I wish that in this particular case grand juries were not secret bodies
and that the evidence taken before them had to be given to the people.'
Chicago is the headquarters in thisjountry for the gigantic and vorac
ious FOOD TRUST. Here much of 'the manipulating of markets and jug
gling with food products is done. And Chicago owes it to the people of this
country to unmask its FOOD HOGS, so that the people can take such
action themselves, or force it from their representatives, as justice seems
to them to demand.
