Sub-basement Placed on Ffle by Etailding Committee Unsanitary Conditions in Basements Condemned Thousands of people in Chicago have holes eaten into their lungs by the great white plague, consumption. The cause of ft. in a large number of cases is a vicious air supply, bad ventilation, in the places where those people have worked for a living. "Out of the 3,000 people who die from consumption of the lungs each year in Chicago the trouble goes back every time to bad air. "The soft pink tissues of the hum an lungs are the most deUcate in the human body. They feed and live on air. IT the air they are fed does not liave the proper amount of oxygen and sunlight the lungs begin to waste away with, consumption. . "Placing people at work in -a base ment 40 feet below street level is a starting point for the breeding of consumption and all other diseases that can be blamed on a bad supply of air for the human throat, lungs and nostrils." This is what Dr. George B.
