BELLE OFF GUARD
' mm 1
Here's an unconventional view of
a very conventional young society
woman, Miss Fleischmann, one of the
belles of Coronado beach and the
daughter of the yeast magnate,
Julius Fleischmann of Cincinnati, 0.
It looks like a summer scene, but
the picture was taken a few days ago
for every day is summerlike at the
California winter resort.
PREPARE FOR FIGHT AGAINST
"Our slogan: A telephone in every
home at a penny a call," says the
front page of printed statement on
the automatic phone situation issued
for campaign use by the Penny
Phone league and 15 other organiza
tions. To let the Chicago Telephone Co.
gobble the automatic system would
be a surrender to the six men who
now control all the public utilities of
Chicago, it is pointed out,, and there
should be action taking the owner
ship of the automatic for the city.
Among the 16 organizations whose
delegates sign the demand are the
Woman's City club, the Political
Equality league, Chicago Federation
of 'Labor, Chicago Progressive club,
Woman's Trade Union league, Wom

Affairs Commission, Single Tax club
and Socialist and Prohibition parties.

Failure to enforce this clause in the
automatic telephone ordinance ren
ders the forfeiture clauses in similar
franchises equally useless.
"The present corporation counsel
was a member of the firm that repre
sented the automatic company inter
ests, even after he was appointed as
sistant corporation counsel for the
city. Is he the proper person to rep
resent the city in this matter if for
feiture proceedings are commenced?
Are we justified in asking for the ap
pointment of special counsel to pro
tect our interests?
"Six men control all of the pubKe
utilities of Chicago9 Are we willing
to permit these six men now holding
property belonging to the city by
right of forfeiture to sell this prop
ety to the telephone trust for $600,
000 and put the proceeds m their own
pockets? Are we, as citizens of Chi
cago, ready to surrender further
rights to these six men by permitting
the sale of the automatic telephone
