FITZPATRICK DENIES HE WAS
BACKED FOR PARK BOARD
John T. Fitzpatrick, pres. Chicago
Fed. of Labor has emphatically de
nied that his. name had been recom
mended by the federation for position
on the park board. ""
This places. Chief Justice John P.
McGoorty in a rather uncomfortable
When the circuit court judges met
to select a park commissioner they
were presented with a resolution
from the C. F. of L., asking that the
judges avail themselves of this op
portunity to at last put just one union
labor man on the park board. The
federation recommended two names.
"Neither of these names was mine,"
The judges disregarded the request
of the union men and appointed Lem
uel B. Patterson to the vacancy. Pat
terson is a banking and stock yards
In explaining why one of the two
recommended by the federation was
not chosen, Judge McGoorty said:
"The names of the other two dele
gates were withdrawn by tie feder
ation, who endorsed him (Fitzpat
rick) instead." Fitzpatrick, it was
announced, was next to Patterson in
votes, and for a while it looked like
Fitzpatrick would be chosen.
"The federation never placed my
name before the judges as a candi
date," said Fitzpatrick today. "I don't
know of anyone putting my name up
to them. The very fact that my posi
tion with the federation would pre
vent me holding the position of park
commissioner is enough to prove that
neither the federation or myself were
instrumental in suggesting my name
as a candidate."
There is bitter feeling in the feder
ation over the action of the circuit
court judges.- It is felt that the name
of Fitzpatrick was introduced that
the judges might have a chance to
back down on the demand of the
union men for a representative on
Formal protest to Gov. Dunne has
been made. Labor feels that in the
past it has too readily pardoned the
knifing of supposed friends who were
with the federation when they want
ed support, but willing enough to
spoof it when the time come for
The protest to the governor is not
an attack on Patterson nor an at
tempt to cast any reflection upon
him. It is directed solely against the
circuit court judges.
A PERFECT DESIGN
"Well, hubby, let's plan our bunga
low." "How do you wish it built, dear?"
"Why, I want the living room, din
ing room, kitchen and three bed
rooms with a southern exposure.
The bathroom, however, can- be on
the other side."
