As the foremost hound leaped for
him Joe scrambled aboard. Noise
lessly the boat pushed forward into
the mangroves. The shouts of the
pursuers grew fainter. They were
hidden in an impenetrable screen.
And suddenly, looking into the
girl's eyes, an immeasurable content
came over Joe, and he thought of
one who waited for him, also. And
his schemes of revenge fell from him
like a wornout garment
