I hope the day isn't far off when all men will understand that they are interested vitally in the daily life of all other men. During the investigation of wages of department store employes by the O'Hara committee it was sought to find W out what a girl could barely exist on; and the idea ap peared to be that if the girls got enough wages to merely exist there wasn't much else to be expected. But that isn't the fair basis. All of us will have to see the importance of a much higher American standard of living than mere existence the bare holding together of soul and body so the individual can keep on working That may work out as to horses and mules, but not as to human beings, on whom depend the character of future American citizenship. Mayor Thompson and the two arbitrators who will act with him now have an opportunity to set a new stand' ard for American citizenship and set a splendid example for all American cities. This editorial is inspired by an advertisement printed in today's Chicago newspapers by the Chicago Surface Lines. There the street railway owners speak of a new era in the management of great properties, with new and higher ideals in the minds of the managers. I shall probably discuss further the contents ofhat advertisement, but today will merely suggest that the men back of the management of the companies make good on their public announcement. I suggest that all of them begin by reading the Decla- jjj ration of Independence and the American constitution and then take for their text the assertion of the" rights of all men to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Then let them analyze that statement carefully and figure out from the standpoint of the public good what meaning all of us ought to give to it as good citizens.
