tion on twilight sleep to American
1 women.
I found Mrs. Boyd, who lives at 128
West 13th st, in a state of cold indig
nation over recent attacks made on
the twilight sleep -method by some
American doctors. ""
"It is easy to explain why twilight
sleep is not always popular with the
family doctor," Mrs. Boyd told me,
"and why there is so much talk of
dead babies and the insanity of moth
ers following the treatment. The
reason is that to be successfully car
ried out the method requires the con
stant presence of the physician in the
sick room in the last stages of child
birth. "Under proper conditions the twi
light sleep method is 80 per cent per
fect Where 'blue babies' have re
sulted from its use the cause was
overdosage of the drug or other im
proper conditions due to the haste or
ignorance of the physician using it.
"I had what may be called a perfect
twilight sleep. I entered the Frei
burg hospital before six o'clock one
morning, the first hyperdermic was
given me at six in the evening and
my baby was born at four the follow
ing morning. I did not know when
my baby was born.
"When I awoke and saw the night
light burning and a nurse standing in
one corner of my room I was per
fectly conscious and free from pain
and I was frightened because I
thought I had been given an overdose
and the birth pains had ceased. I had
felt some pain before being given the
final hyperdermic.
"The nurse saw that my eyes were
open and came towards me.
" 'Do you want to see your baby?'
she asked. And she brought to me
my little son. I did not know that he
had been born."
"Some doctors say that women
suffer just as much under twilight
sleep as during an unassisted birth,"
I said to Mrs. Boyd. "They declare
that the mother simply doesn't re
member pain." ,
"The fact that the pains are ln1
stantly forgotten makes it practically
painless," Mrs. Boyd replied. "Twi
light sleep is a condition of clouded
consciousness during which the
woman may cry out as if in pain.
But the cry of pain means nothing
because it is instantly forgotten. It
is the memory of pain that counts. .
And this is absolutely obliterated. Be- J )
cause inexperienced physicians try to
overcome the physical evidences of
pain they overdose.
"Twilight sleep does away with
fear and shock the horrible fear
which so often precedes childbirth
and the devastating shock to the
whole nervous system which gener
ally follows the unassisted birth.

Wash linoleum and oil cloth with
luke warm water, then polish it with
a soft woolen cloth which has been
dipped in milk.
Ever wash the windows with water
to which a little turpentine has been
added? Try it. One tablespoon of.
turpentine to three quarts of water.
If white of egg is applied with a
small camel's hair paint brush to fly
specks on gilt frames, then rubbed 0
gently with a soft cloth the specks
will disappear.
When your house plants look a
trifle dejected and water does not re
vive them, try putting coffee grounds
on the roots three times a week; then
once a week give, them a tablespoon
ful of olive oil; do not allow the earth
to become hard and dry.
