SENSIBLE QUESTIONS. New
York state is taking a census and
among the questions are these:
What is your sex?
Are you an inmate of an asylum?
Are you an infant under one year
Sounds kind of silly, but if you
want to learn what a New Yorker is
and what he's at you've got to be
right personal and particular in your
questions. We've seen things in 5th
av. whose sex you couldn't guess in
five tries and who would readily be
taken for inmates of some asylum.
"HUMANIZING." Judge William
Quinn of Canton, 0., seems to have
a judicial temperament that is home
opathic. He has started out to "hu
manize" justice, which, in these times
is some job, and he believes in mak
ing violators taste the real effects of

The judge's "humanizing" is said to
work very well. To come to in a
morgue or to spend time in jail when
sober seems to appeal to the inner
self, to affect the sub-consciousness,
to contribute to a peculiar psycho
logical condition, or something like
that, sort of making the booze habit
monotonous, as it were. Anyhow, it

BEE LIFE AND US. The most re
cent investigation of bee lore cranks
discloses that in all likelihood there
was a time when the drones, the male
bees, were the bosses and the work
ers, the stunted females were merely
good natured wives and mothers. The
theory is that scarcity of supplies
and multiplicity of inhabitants forced i
the females to provide for the limita
tion of the swarm, and that when
khey entered their state of perpetual!
spinsterhood and devoted their lives
to labor in storing food supplies
their disused organs of sex became
deadly weapons; you know the fe
male bee only has the sting.
In short, the bee republic ages ago
adopted the motto "one for all," and
the husky loafing male bee who would
not work was dethroned. He became
merely a necessary evil to insure the1
propagation of the species, and when
this duty is performed for the state he
is kicked out to starve by the female '
workers, or else stung to death and'
his body flung over the hedge.
Say, brethren, maybe this woman
suffrage thing has gone far enough,
