F. of L. Head Goes Into Record of U. S. Inspect Olander Shows More Funny Work by Redfield Eastland's Capacity 1,220, Owners Told Congress. The shipping trust, of which the 'Rockefellers and the U. S. Steel cor poration are the chief factors, is more to blame than any person or interest for the sinking of the Eastland, ac cording to Samuel Gompers, presi dent of the American Federation of Labor. "The same shipping combine from the Great Lakes which came before congress and fought against the sea men's bill is responsible for the lax inspection service in the department of commerce," said Gompers. "The shipping trust, the owners of the Eastland included, were among those who fought persistently against the seamen's bill and its provisions for less crowding of boats and bet ter manning of them." Clenching his right fist and smash ing it into the palm of his left hand, he replied to the statement of Sec'y Redfield's assistant, Edwin F. Sweet, who says the labor men never have many any "specific charges" against the inspection service. "Sec'y Nockels of the Chicago Federation of Labor wrote the de partment naming the Christopher imismimmmmtmmmmmmiiimim
