der why every notoriety seeking non
entity hitches his wagon to the movie
stars to secure newspaper space for
his name and vacuous vaporizing.
The most recent example of a male
biped offering what would be a gross
insult to the motion picture profes
sion, if the source could be seriously
considered, is found in this state
ment of Robert C. Barton, "Execu
tive Secretary of the Morals Effi
ciency Committee of Los Angeles."
I am "in the movies" and know
that Mr. Barton's statement is jj.
shameful untruth; Mr. Barton is not
in. the movies, therefore his "investir
gation" is necessarily of superficial
nature. Mr. Barton's activities as an
investigator probably have been con
fined to reading frequent newspaper
accounts of "movie actors and act
resses," who have been charged with
various sorts of delinquency. I have
investigated scores of such accounts
and almost invariably the "film star"
involved has been some screen struck
boy or girl who may have applied for
work at the picture studios, or per
haps worked a few days as an

convenient to give the sweeping "in
the movies" as an occupation.
These outward and visible signs of
the impurity which 'exists only in the
purient minds of investigating com
mittees, made up for the most part
of nervous, voluptuous mala persons
who seem to find unbounded delight'
in the hunt for immorality, even
though they, do not find it, do not
illustrate the real conditions.
Now for the benefit of those read
