This Gibbons-McFarland battle
looks like a good chance for the fan
inclined to wager to keep his money
in his pocket, with the flap buttoned
down. Too many conflicting stories
are coming out of New York.
From some experts we get the hot
tip that Gibbons is having a desperate
time getting in condition. He is said
A to be surly because things are going
badly. His speed is absent and he
can't hit for shucks. And these same
experts come along with a yarn that
Packey is in the best condition of his
life and ready to make Gibbons look
slow.
Thep up steps another expert and
declares that just the opposite situa
tion exists. He stamps Gibbons as the
fastest man he ever saw, primed
for a dizzy pace, and says McFarland
is7 worried over the outcome of the
battle.
It all depends on the paper you
read which man is in the best condi
tion. The same things holds true of
the seat sale. In the Trib we are
wised to the fact that the special
fight train was to leave this morning
with 165 fans aboard. But last night
a p. m. oracle said only four of the
200 tickets sent here had been sold,
the special train had been canceled
and interest among local sports was
at a low ebb, so far as spending mo
ney was concerned.
Mrs. W. A. Gavin vs. Miss E. Pearce
and Miss Alexa Stirling vs. Mrs. C.
H. Vanderbeck are the semi-final
cards for the woman's national golf
tourney at Onwentsia today. Miss
Pearce is the only Chicagoan, and an
international flavor is given by Mrs.
Gavin, who comes from England.
A Miss Pearce surprised the gallery by
defeating Mrs. Barlow. Mrs. Bei
feld was ousted by Mrs. Vanderbeck
in the best -golf of the meet Mrs.
Vanderbeck had a medal card of 84.

Beginning tomorrow afternoon, :
when the Boston Braves inaugurate
the final eastern invasion of the West '
Side, Cub fans can be prepared to''
view many new faces in white uni-Jl

fore unheard of athletes will be giv-t
en a chance, and other gents partially
known to fame will be given a chance
to show what they can do in Cub re

newcomers. He is not new to Cub J

three years. His first season he per-

has only done utility duty. Bresna- '
