He makes the statement in defense
oFrhis latest production, "Sadie
Love," -which he frankly admits is
"rather naughty," in fact quite
risque. Marjorie Rambeau will play
the feminine lead.
He makes, .the bold declaration
that the risque play appeals to wom
en. And as wdmen determine the
success or failure of a production, he
writes the kind they will patronize.
"Men may laugh at'a risque play
or line or situation," he said. "WOM
EN DEVOUR IT. The reason forthis,
I contend, is in the different way of
living which men and women follow.
"Men's lives are much freer. There
are not the sam,e conventions binding
their actions. Women's mode of liv
ing and loving are frequently ham
pered and curtailed by 'what the
world would say.'
"It is thfs very condition which
makes her. so interested in the the
atrical prouction which is 'a bit
"Women, find an outlet for their
pent-up lives in the theater, or per
haps they find it in going to a church
where there is a popular preacher, for
the church is often as much a dissipa
tion as the theater.
"As women decide the fate of the
average play, why not write that play
which appeals to them?
"The trend of future playbuilding
will be toward a much wider field, es
pecially in the relations between men
and women. There is a great flower
ing season to come to the American
drama, as there has been in all coun
tries after a period of commercial
successes. We are getting away from
the old Puritan ideas and influences.
For the Puritan element has been
against art, beauty and the free ex
pression of the emotions. The Puri
tans were a fanatical class. ,
"I'd much rather be a son of the

lution. When people become con
servative it i3 npt because they have
learned more, but because they feel
