TWO LIVES
By Maud Cobb
(Copyright by W. G. Chapman.)
"Do you see that couple crossing
the road?" askedHammersley at the
club. "That's Benson and his wife.
Curious story. She was Anna Devine,
you know."
"You mean the famous Anna De
vine?" inquired old Saxton, whose
reminiscences of 20 years ago were
always entertaining and frequently
indiscreet.
"That's she," said Hammersley,
nodding.
"But I thought she went to the had,
down and out!" exclaimed Saxton.
'Disappeared from public ken. All
sorts of stores told about her."
"Right enough. But look at them!"
said Hammersley.
The woman clung to the man's arm
and, as they passed under the club
windows, it was plain enough that
they were desperately in love with
each other.
"It's a curious story," repeated
Hammersley, "and I don't know quite
which it illustrates more, the power
of men and women to rise on step
ping stones of their dead past, or the
regenerating force of love. However,
here you are:
"Anna Devine used to spend her
summers at a famous place in the
north woods, now torn down. It .is
only a memory with us who used to
go there. But we had gay times there,
and Anna was always the biggest
daredevil of the lot.
"There was a young fellow, a guide,
just an ordinary, simple woodsman,
but made like a Greek god. 'Apollo,'
we used to call him. He took the
name good-naturedly, and probably
never heard of Apollo before. Anna
Devine was struck by his appearance,
as any woman would be.
Just for a joke, she determined to
make the young fellow fall in love
with her. We were all in the secret
was engaged to a country girl, which
made it less justifiable. Well, gentle
men, it was a mighty interesting play.
Anna and the guide used to go off
fishing together, and it wasn't more
than a day or two before we could see
that the plot was succeeding by the
look on the young man's face when
they were together. So matters went
on for a week.
"The climax came sooner than was
expected. Anna had staged the
