BUNGLING PRESS IVOR
BRINGS BIG SUITS
Tribune, News, Journal and Associated Press Sued for)
Big Lumps of Coin by The Baseball World Other
Papers To Be Hit United Press and Hearst
Service Papers Not in It,
A bungling piece of newspaper
work will be dragged to light when a
new batch of libel suits against loop
papers are tried. The Tribune, News,
Journal and Associated Press are
each sued for $50,000. Others will be
hit later.
Early this summer the Tribune
came out with a big expose of the
"Weekly World," a sporting paper
which, it was alleged, operated as a
blind for a lottery scheme. The gam
bler bought the paper for 25 cents
and got a chance on prizes aggregat
ing $1,500.
Although the Trib sprung the ex
pose, the "World" was published in
Wilkesbarre, Pa., and the lottery was
supposed to have been operated from
there.
Numerous stories followed on the
lottery scandal. Then, one by one,
newspapers over the country began
to call the lottery publication the
"Baseball World" instead of the
"Weekly World."
,The Associated Press was appealed
to by W. A. Stuart, owner of the
Baseball World of Chicago. He says
he pointed out the mistake in names
