druggist if alcohol is classed as a nar
cotic, an anaesthetic or a stimulant
Refer to his book on drugs and see
for yourself. A peach is not a pear,
even if they are both fruit
M. H. says that alcohol applied to
the skin without evaporation causes
irritation. So does wet bread and
most of the other things we eat. Al
cohol does not destroy or paralyze
the living celL
One per cent alcohol cannot be de
tected in the stomach with 99 per
cent other foods favorable or other
wise. Six per cent or 19 per cent does
not retard digestion. Two quarts of
beer in 24 hours has about the alco
holic ratio of 5 per cent Alcohol has
a heat value in digestion. A gram of
alcohol liberates about seven heat
All the physiological changes of al
cohol in digestion are not known.
That it accumulates in the nerve tis
sue to a greater degree than it should
is only a statement
Alcohol in itself is inanimate, its
energy is transferred to the user
through his digestive arrangement,
the muscles, nerves, etc. So built up
or nourished by alcohol are the same
as if nourished by the food it substi
tutes. Hans Wagner, Ty Cobb,
Steinmets, Roosevelt and a few mil
lion others seem to keep up the chp
on a temperate use of it
There is no one that has an equil
ibrium of perfect health. Energy in
man is like energy in a machine, both
wear out and need a lot of oil before
they are thrown in the scrap heap.
People do not drink to work. They
drink for pleasure. After any big
meal a person is not at their best
mentally or physically. His digestive
apparatus is using his energy. Ath
letic records are not made with a
full stomach, be it whisky or beef
steak. Robert Doner.
LOAN SHARKS. I have had some
experience with loan sharks and I
wish you would publish this letter, so
we can hear from others who have
had experience with them. I was laid
up and went to a loan company for
a loan of $10 for six weeks. They
charged me ?3 for this measly sum,
and, mind you, I had to start paying
them back the next Saturday at the
rate of $2 a week for five weeks and
$3 the sixth week. Do you not think
interest on this small sum is out
rageous? Another time I borrowed $5 for
two weeks and it cost me $1 to bor
row this. What's more, when you
want a loan you have to have with
you the sum of two cents to pay
the revenue tax.
I overheard a loan shark say he
had 1,500 accounts, so they certainly
must skin the poor working man
something awful. Do you think the
interest is legal? Art: they violating
the law?
The Daily News gets the suckers
for them through their columns. I
would like to hear from others who
have had experience with these
leeches, so if you see fit to publish
this put my address at the bottom. .
