Poverty Is the Real Cause and Food the Cure, U. S.
Physician Claims Gov't Report Is Indictment
of Industrial Wrongs,

starvation!
"The mysterious plague that swept
the south and is threatening other
sections of the country is an out
growth of poverty!
"We've been giving our starving
people medicine, when all they need
is food!"
These are the statements of Dr.
Jos Goldberger of the U. S. public
health service, who, if he has solved
the pellagra riddle, has given to the
world the most iniportant medical
discovery of modern tiin.es.
This year 75,000 people in United
States will suffer from pellagra. And
twice 75,000 will suffer from pellagra
in its incipient stages where it has
not been diagnosed as such.
"Prior to 1907," said Goldberger
today, "pellagra was unknown in this
country. Since then, it has appeared
to be a steady increase.
"Last year Mississippi reported
something like 12,000 cases; this
year they will report 16,000. Last
year they had about 1,200 deaths;
they will have more this year.
