THE PUBLIC FORUM
STATE ST. BARGAINS. Attract
ed by a number of banners announc
ing great jewelry bargains at a S.
State st. store, I bit. In the window
a tray of emblematic pins were
tagged, "Sale price 9c each." I re
cognized them as a 50c article. En
tering I asked for one of them, but
was informed they had none. But,
said I, "will you not give me one of
the two of the same kind there are
two alike in the window. I was re
fused. I consulted a policeman. He told
me it was unlawful to advertise and
refuse the goods. He referred me to
180 N. La Salle st, first district po
lice. I explained my case to the
officer in charge. He said the only
thing I could do would be to get out
a warrant which meant expense and
trouble. After a second thought he
suggested that I go to the Tribune
office and state the facts. He said
they had done a great deal in clean
ing up these fakers. "But lady," he
added, "I doubt if they will help you.
You see these fellows give it some
great ads. There is lots of money in
it for the Trib."
What I should like to know is: Was
there no way to secure that bargain
except by warrant? A Rebekah.
SEGREGATION. To prove that
without segregation a city is misgov
erned I shall give a comparison.
When an owner of a city lot want
ed to erect a residence for himself he
called an architect to help him lay out
the plans for the location of the
library, living room, bedrooms, kitch
en, sun parlors, children's playroom,
garage and hothouse. The architect
drew his attention to the fact that
one of the most necessary apart
ments the owner forgot to mention
the bathroom. Although unaesthet
ic, the architect said it hjad to go into
the building and it had to be built in
a sanitary way, and kept in a clean
and sanitary condition.
So with a city, it is all very well to
have your boulevards, your streets,
parks and art galleries, but we also
must have jails, hospitals and a seg
regated district, and kept in orderly
and sanitary condition, under super
vision of police and health depart-
ment When the patient insisted that
the doctor close up the sore, the poi
son, which had had an outlet at one
spot, spread all over the body of the
patient and killed him. The author
ities have stopped the open sore,
segregation, with the consequence of
spreading prostitution throughout
the city. D. Simon.
THE INVASION. According to
newspapers the U. S. has invaded
Mexico to capture Villa. Where were
all our brave soldiers when Villa
made his raid? Does not the U. S.
keep troops stationed on the border
to look out for such things? If Villa's
raid took place while they were
"asleep at the switch" what right
have they to pursue him into Mexico?
Here is a case of the law and gov
ernment sending soldiers to capture,
and, if necessary, kill people who
have been made insane by a capital
istic system that is worse than ours.
I read several articles quoting Villa
as saying he wishes to give back to .
the people the land stolen from them
by the capitalists. Why he raided a
small border town I am at a loss to
understand, but if such raid was
made while soldiers were there to
protect the lives and property of res
idents they should have taken Villa
then and there. The U. S. laws and
government are sending soldiers to
fight and capture people they don't
know and never saw or spoke to. The
bandits did not harm the soldiers,
and if our soldiers kill a few hundred (f)i
for what the bandits done? Two
wrongs never make one right, and
our soldiers killing the bandits is the
second wrong. This invasion will no
doubt make plenty of .miserable
homes and homeless children, both.
