Evans is a methodical cuss. He
Hoes all his work by system. Certain
hours each day are spent at the type

spent in the gymnasium of the Cleve
land Athletic club. An hour or two
is set aside for motoring.
Evans is married and has one
youngster, a boy of four, whom he
assures me will not be an umpire.
The Cubs are through with Tampa
for 1916. The seconds are already
on their way, being in Albany, Ga.,
today, and the first squad will depart
after a workout today. The physical
condition of the players is excellent
and that is the biggest item in a
gang of veterans like the North Sid
crs. The other things will come later.
Each man is leaving the camp thor
oughly limbered and about ready to
put some steam and speed into his
work. This goes for the old-timers,
who have been disappointing the
fans here at home by a succession of
defeats at the hands of the Phillies.
It is doubtful if even Tinker cared
rvery much about whether he could
lick the league champions. He was
after practice, and the frequency
with whfch he shifted the men
showed how little he was bent on im
mediate results.
Yerkes and Doolan are starting the
northern trip as regulars at second
and short, just as was intended from
the time the team went into camp.
They were ousted in favor of other
men a couple of times, but the vet
eran pair could not be denied at

So far the pitchers, as a corps,
have done nothing to brag of, but
there have been flashes which show
the latent power the box crew pos
sesses. The majority of the hurlers
are veterans, men who know the bat
ters of the league without any in-
struction from the catchers, and fel
lows who have paid attention to the
weaknesses of their various oppo
nents. During the early stages of the sea
son, even should their arms not be
in tip-top shape, they will be able to
give a good account of themselves
because of this knowledge and the
ability to employ it
McConnell and Vaughn pitched
against the Phils in the final game
and each did an excellent bit of work,
with Vaughn having a shade the ad
vantage. It was a remarkable im
provement over the last effort of the
big left-hander. If Vaughn is right
this year he will be a big asset to
Tinker, for the best hitters in the
league are men who swing from the
off side of the plate. With Vaughn
in condition, mentally and physical
ly, he can puzzle any team in the
Phils won final, 3 to 1, with Alex
ander and Demaree pitching. Yerkes
and Doolan bunched doubles for the
lone Cub run.
Geo. Stellars, the local semi-pro
pitcher who had a tryoht with the
White Sox, is on his way home. He
showed great promise, but there is
no room for him on the present Sox
staff. If the youngster prefers
minor league ball to semi-pro work
around the city, it is probable Row
land will find him a job with some
club in one of the smaller leagues.
He needs experience, the kind he
would get in a minor.
