The coroner's investigators said that the man had been killed by a fall down an elevator shaft in the department store while -working on a lift for the Otis Elevator Co. He had been drinking heavily before the accident, the coroner's men said, and this might have hastened his death. At Rothschild's President Davis of the concern was interviewed. "Can you tell The Day Book about the accident?" he was asked. "Don't know a thing about it," he answered. "You call either our store physician or the superintendent They'll give you the facts." Dr. Strauss of the store was ques tioned, but he referred all inquiries to the superintendent's office. Here all questions were answered with a crisp "I have nothing to say." The Otis Elevator Co. officials sajd that McLain had been injured, in Rothschild's, but not while in the employ of the Otis Co. According to them, he fell down stairs in the store half hour after quitting time, April 5. He had been working on a broken elevator in the store during the day. He was under the influence of liquor when the accident happened, the Otis Co. said. At the central detail police station there was no report of the injury of McLain. Cap't Morgan Collins of the district hurried two policemen to the department store when this was made known. The policemen demanded a full ac count of the accident and it was given them. .The report stated that McLain was found at the bottom of the stairs on the 9th floor, badly bruised and under the influence of liquor, on the afternoon of April 5. o o St. Louis, Mo. MEN IN MACHINE SHOOT UP POLLING PLACES 3 CAUGHT Six men in a motor opened gunfire on two 18th ward polling places to day and a police chase followed that made people along W. Madison and Lake streets think that the Mexicans had crossed the Desplaines. From a 7-passenger auto the men opened fire at the 34th and 36th pre cinct polling places, 1715 and 1736 W. Madison st, as they sped by. It chanced that Motorcycle Police men Eisenberg and Schultz, Des plaines st station, were near by in plain clothes. They gave chase. They fired as they pursued, aiming at the chauffeur and tires. The chase led west on Madison to Western, thence to Lake and back to Madison on Paulina. Once the motor police caught up with the high-powered machine, but the ma chine quickly turned, tried to run them down and got out of reach of their guns. The auto stopped in front of Sul livan Democratic headquarters, 1462 W. Madison sL The occupants jumped and dashed for the building. Three were caught. The other ran to a cigar factory over the Demo cratic headquarters and locked the door. The police shot through the door, then broke it in, but the three had fled through the rear. The three arrested were: Ernest Taylor, 2244 Jackson blvd.; James Ryan, 1847 W. Adams, and Geo. Thorne, chauffeur, 407 S. California. Thome told Lieut Fitzgerald that the five men hired his car to tour the 18th ward polling places. The police say all the men arrested are work ers for Barney Grogan, Sullivan candidate for 18th ward committeeman. Pittsburgh.
