know it, I realized that my natural
emotions would have to be curbed by
a safe and sane bit if I did not want

'My schooling progressed naturally.
I learned easily, loved history and
geography, but hated arithmetic.
But my school life was unhappy
very. I was not popular with the
girls. They said they were afraid of

black and strange looking. There is
no greater tragedy in life than that
of a child who is not popular with

out crying over it. But I never con

mother because I was ashamed. I
felt there must be some horrible de

I think this condition gave me my

edy. And it has made such a deep
impression on me I am never the first
to seek a friendship, for fear I may

If I tried I imagine I might paint
a touching picture of early poverty
and unsurmountable difficulties that
