TRACTION AND GAS PRO
CRESS. Chicago business publica
tions are saying it is better to boost
than to knock the public utilities.
They point to St Louis as a sample
of what knocking the public utilities
will do. And .this from a speech by
Festus J. Wade, president Mercantile
Trust Co., before the Business Men's
league of that city is quoted:
"Walk through the downtown
streets of St Louis at night and it
looks like a city of the dead. Walk
through these streets in the daytime
and find that 75 per cent of the office
buildings are idle. The banks of J3t
Louis have made no substantial pro
gress in the last 15 years.
"Today it is a popular thing to get
up before the 57 varieties of organi
zations which St Louis has and con
demn public utility corporations for
not furnishing a seat for every pas.
senger or saying that the electric or
gas rates are too high."
Against this argument Reedy's
Mirror of St Louis points to Cleve
land, O. If there's any town in this
country where the public utilities
have been lambasted and cracked
year in and year out it's Cleveland,
the home city of Tom Johnson, who
was a millionaire traction magnate
and led the popular chorus of howls
that the traction game is crooked.
Three-cent fare and municipal own
ership have made more headway in
Cleveland than any other of the large
American cities.
And with all this knocking of the
public utilities, week in and week
out attacks on the public service cor
porations, Reedy's Mirror points to
the fact that Cleveland has been
gaining on St Louis in population
and it looks as though the Missouri
town will take a back seat behind
Cleveland.
Also, Reedy's Mirror points to St
Louis' lack of a single newspaper
that fights for the people as against
the plundering traction and gas cor
porations, while Cleveland has one
newspaper, the Press, which has
been on the job from start to finish,
year in and year out, showing up
public utilities grab and graft
