J., announce the drumfish thereabouts are destroying big oyster beds by beating them to death. The correct way to kill an ele phant, says Capt. Cushman Rice, is to shoot him between the eye and the tusk. Connie Mack killed his elephant by amputating its infield and pitching staff. According to experts, Jack Dillon is Scotch, Irish, Polish and German, which gives rise to the belief he may some day be neutral. It wouldn't surprise us a bit if the A. A. U. suspends all athletes com peting against those Mex profession als. Hannes Kohlemainen asserts he enlisted in the New York guard merely to run. He can still go to Mexico and achieve his ambition. The Louisiana legislature failed to pass a bill legalizing racing under the Pari-mutue system. By Mark Shields Yesterday we spoke in high praise of Mike Prendergast and his pitching heart All Mike did after that was Q to hold the Pirates to three hits in the first game, tSen rescue Tom Seaton in the second and toss three more innings. In 12 frames the Cal lahans amassed a total of one run. Not before Sunday will Manager Tinker have his regular team in the field, but, in the meantime, the un derstudies are playing some first class baseball. In one or two in stances the subs' lack the speed and punch of the regulars, but these defi ciencies' are made up for in the de termined manner in which the relief men go about their work. This is especially true in the case of Otto Knabe, who- is filling in at second base. Knabe is the pepper pot of the club. He is fighting every step of every in ning. No chance gets away from him. But he doesn't fight with his own teammates. His vitriolic vocab ulary is directed at the opposing players and he causes more worry to the aliens, than would be believed. Costello of the Pirates was some what off in the first battle yesterday. Knabe immediately selected the young outfielder as his victim ,and throughout the day was deriding him. Result, Costello failed even to hit the ball hard and his fielding was about as uncertain as any the North Side has seen this year. Otto also works excellently with Q the baserunners when he is at bat. His manner of working the squeeze play is perfect, and on the hit-and-run he is consistently successful.. Cy Williams sprained his ankle in the first game Tuesday and will be on the bench for a few days. Zwilling is playing center field. 1
