QUESTIONS FOR COCHRAN.
As a reader of Tie Day Book and a
citizen allow me to ask you a few
questions in regard to your editorial
under date of the 29th.
In the first place, you must be a
Why was it impossible for a teach
er not one of this creed to get a po
sition from ' the Democratic school
board in the past?
Was it not shown in the Teachers'
Federation suit against the present
school board that the Catholic
priests ruled all appointments, as
brought out and testified by Mrs. Ella
Why is it that you must be a Cath
olic or K. C. to get a position in all
departments controlled by the Dem
ocrats in the City Hall?
Why must you be a Catholic to
get a position with the street car
Why is it that you must be one of
the same creed to get a job as po
liceman in this city or on the fire de
partment and the water department?
In fact, all positions controlled by
the Democrats in state, county, city
Was anything done to the K C
policemen who were to keep order at
Boulevard hall last winter when Dr.
Slattery tried to speak and 500 peo
ple witnessed a priest with an armed
guard try to break up this meeting,
of which I was a witness? And aft
erward quite a few of the audience,
women included, were beaten up by
this same K. C. crowd, while about
fifteen K. C. bums with city police
stars looked on?
I, for one,. believe that if the pres
ent mayor does nothing but clean out
the City Hall, police dep't and the
public schools of this crowd, which
have been so rotten that they stink,
as the mayor expressed regarding
the police dep't, all American citizens
should, appreciate, his. efforts and as-.
sist him in every shape or form and
not condemn him or his cabinet.
I would like to have you publish
this letter and your answer to same
in your paper at your convenience.
Paul H. Glienke, 4538 S. Kilpatrick.
Cochran's Answer. I belong to no
church. What religious training I
got in early youth was in the Meth
odist church and Sunday school, ex
cept what Presbyterian influence
came to me through marriage. Yet I
have no more prejudice in my heart
against Catholics than against Meth
odists and Presbyterians, and know
of no reason why a good Catholic
can't be as patriotic an American cit
izen as I think I am. I don't know
and don't believe that it is true that
none except Catholics could get po
sitions under Democratic school
boards in the past The number of
Protestant teachers indicate that the
charge isn't true. Neither is it true
that Catholic priests ruled appoint
ments under Ella Flagg Young. And
I don't believe it is true that one must
be a Catholic or K. C. to get posi
tions under Democrats in the City
Hall. I know nothing about positions
with the street car company, but the
charges doesn't sound reasonable to
I do think that much of the misun
derstanding in the minds of sincere
and earnest citizens is due to reck
less assertions like the above, evi
dently made without investigation as
This is true also as to frequent
charges that the Teachers' Federa
tion is controlled by the Catholic
church. I don't believe the Catholic
church has made any. attempt to
control the Federation and an con
vinced that it couldn't control even
the Catholic members of the Feder
ation if it tried.
Personally, I believe the members
of the Federation, without regard to
their private religious beliefs, would
welcome a thorough investigation of
all these charges of church, influence.
