The review of the opening show last night, is elsewhere in to day's Empire. 7 “SPOOK RANCH' IS NOW AT PALACE 8!'— ---- :: The picturesque background if the, Mojave wlesert, a supposedly desert-, ed anil haunted ranch house ami a clever plot full of comedy and heart gripping drama, were merged to gether to give “Spook Ranch,’’ the latest Hoot Gibson picture released; lty Universal, which is now playing gt the I’alaco Theatre. With a plot filled to the brim with rapid action and laughs Iloot, as Jiill Bangs, a Texas cowboy, who owns the gold mining rights to the Mojave desert, is attempting to as sert his rights is arrested and prom ised his freedom by the sheriff on condition that he will solve the mys tery of a ranch which has been de serted since the murder of a man three years before. Not knowing what it is about Bill agrees and with his colored valet goes to investigate. Unexplained noises as well as threats of (lea'll come their way, much to the terror of the colored man and the astonish ment of Bill, who has expected a tamo time. Friend, director, and the pi rformers showed the results of his careful and exacting direction. “Pickles"' will be shown for the last time tonight, the curtain rising i promptly at $ o'clock. From the opening scene to Hie closing chorus "Pickles” travels a fust moving course that allows not | a dull moment. There are three acts, and two scenes, both of which are new and attractive, having been especially painted for the production by John Harris. The lighting effects of which there are many, add to the beauty of the scenes, and arc well handled by L. (.'. l-emieux, electri cian. The four female leads are splend idly portrayed by Nadja Vestal, as Ilona, a gypsy girl, playing a sou brotte role around whom the plot centers; Crystal Snow Jenne. in a romantic role as Lady Vivian De laney. a charming English widow; Alina Weil, in a semi-lead role as! June Pennington, an American heir j ess and Francis Woisherg in a super comedy role as Louisa, a Viennese waitress. Playing the lends in the male role are J. I!. IJernhofnr, ill the comedy lead as J. Jennison Jones, an adver tising expert; J. A. Davis, in ft char acter role as Captain Kinski, chief , of the detective bureau of Vienna: I L. T. "Pickles” is full of song hits and the principnla acquitted themselves admirably ill jilt, moving with the lines in the var.ses and chorus and displaying tinners! unding of their business. The songs range from tie’ jazzy fo.\ trot time to dreamy waltz, numbers. There is a mixed quar tett ■ at the finale of Hie second ael, especially rehearsed by Mrs. .leiim that i the lie> t ever heard ill Ji: nonn. "Pickles” also brought out a new musician in Mrs. 'M. II.
