BRINGING UR FATHER WHERE I <3 HE? IglRf'' lji&tekj-da.do'y- my qiRL Chum at College \<5> COM'KiC. TO SPE.KJO Two WEEK*o WITH t'-lE.- CM <oO HAPPY By GEORGE McMANUS Twi £ <S) 1999.1 nil Feature Service, Icc Great Britain rights reserved NINE WOMEN OWNERS ENTER COLTS IN KENTUCKY DERBY The derby of Kentucky has been won only three times by women owners, but the entry list each year includes a sizeable number of feminine-owned colts, all hoping to emulate the victory of Heigh Count (finishing above) and his owner, Mrs. John Hertz (below). LOUISVILLE, May 16.—The la;. sex rarely gels a break in me Ken tucky derby. Women owners have known success on other tracks; women trainers have brought great colts along; slim fillies have gone on to mighty conquests—but not at Churchill Downs. Only three women owners ever have had their entries paraded be fore the clamoring thousands; never a woman trainer has seen her hopes fulfilled. And only one filly came down the stretch victorious. The derby is a man's race for colts. But the ladies never give up. This year the fair sex has flung down the gage of battle again. Nine feminine owners have eligibles for the classic and most of these are expected to go to the post. These colts and fillies hope to breeze home with their owners’ i hopes as Black Gold came home in I 1924 for Mrs. R. M. Hoots, as Reigh ! Count carried Mrs. John Hertz’ I colors to the fore in 1928 and Mrs. Laska Darnell had her hopes jus tified in 1904 with Elwood. But there are no fillies listed which horsemen appear willing to hack to repeat the great race run by Regret in 1915 when the daugh ter of famous of Broomstick romp ed home from 16 starters. Chicatie, owned by Mrs. Graham Fair Vanderbilt, tops the list of women-owned eligibles in the minds of those who sit on rails and make prognostications. This bay son of Chicle had little chance to show his stuff as a two year old, but has looked well this year. Mrs. L. G. Kaufmu..’s Twink is; well liked. He is an imported colt of good racing blood and showed ( his heels to a noteworthy list in his first year of racing. Mrs. Margaret Marshall, racing: the Rody Marshall stables, likes her Stylish Mack and so do the stable- j men who have brought around this i son of Hildur. Mrs. Ambrose Clark has Aquas-j tella, a bay filly, on the list of el- ; igibles, but the derby being a tre- j mendous grind for a filly, the daughter of Cudgel-Waterblossom, is expected to be reserved for later filly stakes. Lee Cooper, big son of Wrack, is Dwned by Mrs. E. Denemark and at Louisville, where he trained, the ;olt has a wealth of friends. Brown, has been given a good deal of attention by the bookies, his odds coming down like the au tumn leaves. He will leave the post not far behind the favorites in ! the matter of public support. Chip, chestnut gelding entered by 'Mrs. E. L. Swlkard, is an unknown quantity but has his backers. I Mrs. A. C. Van Winkle is run ning Deep River, a Pebbles colt, and Mrs. A. Vaughan has Charles the First on the list. Eight good colts and a filly. They may carry on the tradition of Reigh Count, Black Gold and Elwoci. V r v.. I MEN ARE PRETTIER SAYS BAYLOR MAN WACO, Tex., May 16.— Man's pulchritude is greater than woman’s is the belief of Morley Jennings, athletic di rector of Baylor university. He hesitates to call men beautiful, but rather says they are more clean-cut and graceful than women. “Grace belongs to the col lege athlete because in every action he shows co-ordina tion that is not found among his co-ed friends,” he says. He gains it by exercising more and living naturally.” 1 FIVE MAN O’ WAR COLTS ENTERED IN CLASSIC j LOUISVILLE, May 16.—Man o’ War, greatest thoroughbred this i country ever produced, will be rep resented in the fifty-fifth renewal of the derby, May 18, by five of his get. j “Red,” as the big horse is called ' at the Lexington farms where he is at stud, has five of his colts entered for the classic, the great est number of any sire.
