WORK TO START NEXT SPRING ON HYDER PROJECT Three Million Dollar Power Plant Will Be Built at Davis River — Work on a $3,000,000 hydro-elec ! trie project near Hyder will be j launched next Spring by the Port I land Canal Power Company if the j Federal Power Commission grants | a final license by that time, it was ! made known here yesterday by | Willis T. Bateheller, President, who I was here conferring with Regional j Forester C. H. Flory. He was ac companied by Mrs. Bateheller, for i merly Miss Alice Rapp, who lived i here several years as a girl, at I tending local Public Schools. I Mr. Bateheller is the son of W. W. Bateheller, well known local business man. He and Mrs. Batchel ler left last night on the Princess Norah for Seattle, their home, af ter spending Sunday and Monday in the city. Type of Project The first unit of the Hyder proj I ect will have a capacity of 15,000 horsepower. Mr. Bateheller said. It will be composed of a storage reser voir and dam, tunnel, pipe-line, power house and some 40 miles of transmission line supported on steel towers. The reservoir will be locat ed in Davis River Valley. It wil be formed by the coastruction of a concrete dam in a box canyon, the dam to be 200 feet high and 600 feet across the face. The tunnel wil tap the reservoir about 50 feet below the face. It will be 1.500 feet long and have a line diameter of 16 feet. A pipe-line 500 feet long will lead from the gate house to the powerhouse. Two tur bines, each of 7,500 horsepoper ca pacity. will be driven by the water supply which will have a drop of about 350 feet from the intake. “We are ready to go ahead with permanent construction as soon as the Power Commission will grant our application for final license,’’ Mr. Bateheller said. “We have com ! pleted all of our preliminary exam inations and field surveys. During October we worked 40 men in the f.eld and kept a crew on all last j month. Our plans are complete. We | hope there will be no serious delay j ? We expect to have the plant in operation not later than January 1, 1932.” Market Is Assured Market for the power is assured in the Portland Canal mining dis trict, Mr. Batcheller declared. It is planned to furnish cheap power fcr industrial uses to all operating mines and for public utilities in the towns of Hyder, and Stewart, B. C. The company, he added, does not expect to enter the distribution field in municipalities, however, but will wholesale to existing companies. It is estimated that there is a ready market for 12.500 horsepower at this time. Diesel-manufactured power is now used, and the com pany will furnish electricity at a rate so much below the current cost that even the companies manufac turing their own power will find it economical to shut down the Diesel | plants, it was said. I Mining men in the district are confident that cheap power will greatly enlarge operations there and as new properties are opened (and become producers, the field j will be greatly enlarged. "We are i prepared to take care of all de mands, as we can increase our ca pacity up to 50.000 horsepower by adding to the storage capacity of the reservoir.” Mr. Batcheller said, j "It is 18 years since I last visited , Juneau, and while I knew general- , ly that the community had grown, I was surprised at the extent of j its progress,” he said. "Your fine I streets, splendid business buildings and up-to-date stores and general appearances, indicates a remarkable progressiveness.” Mr. Batcheller said he expected to return next Spring and spend more time visiting here. j Clothing made or pressed by u» \ will retain their shape.
