ment of the coaj strike at HOCK Springs
Saturday the iisuanco of a circular by
thin Oregon Short Lino announcing that
tho rate on coal from the mines to this
city would be reduced 25 cents per ton
on all coal in storage Aug 1 Is of con
sKlerablo interest to the public rue
1nlon Pacific announced a like reduc
tion of 25 cents per ton In the purchnsi

Short Line namely to parties having
coal In storage at tho beginning of
August next the tonda will refund 25
edits per IOn each making a total re
duction to Healers ot BO cents per ton

The Tnlon Pacific and Oregon Short
Ilnu will amend their tariffs as soon
as it can he done legally from Hock
SprIngs and mincH on the Oregon Short
Line Incorporating a piovlslon to the
effect that rates on coal shipped through
the bummer months actually in storage
at the exphutlon or tho tariffs Aug 31
1J07 will he reduced 23 cents per ton on
the refund plan The Union Pacific
Coal company has also autiioiftcd a
further reduction of 23 cents per ton
from the mlno prices under the same
conditions
This action 13 taken by the trans
pot tatlon companies with the object of
Inducing the shipment of coal through
the summer In anticipation of fuel
shortage during tho winter oC lJ07 and
HOt In view of the labor trouble and
shortage ot men at the mines It Is not
known to what txent this policy will I
prove effective The railroad compa
nies have ample equipment to haul all i

not forecast with accuracy the ability
of the mines to nil their orders never
