ELDER MI JHnM S

Addresses Largo Congregation
Upon First Principles of
The Gospel
NOTHING NEW IN TEACHINGS
Scriptures Xot Kubject In lrhno In
Ifrpretnllon Holler Mono
Not Sulllclcnt
Eldor Mathonlhnh Thomas nddrcssod
n largo congregation nt thr tabernacle
yesterday afternoon His theme for
the most part wns the llrnt principles
or tho gospel In most of these tho
speaker showed the Latterday Saints
do not differ materially from their
friend of the various Christian church
es As to other Initial doctrine It
was pointed out thnt there Is nothing
new or strange In their promulgation
Perhaps every listener and his fathers
before him had read nnd reread the
numerous pacsages of Scripture where
Ill these laws and commandments were
Inculcated of old The only difference
between tll Latterday Saints and the
members of other churches 101 In the
fact that tho former believe that noth
ing that God has revealed can be looked
upon as nonessential whllo the tend
ency of the creeds of the day Isto put
private Intropretatlon upon tho Scrip
tures accepting as much of Christs
teachings ns suits their own notion
and passing over the remainder ns being
unnecessary for salvation
PUKST WINDER PRESIDES
President John n Winder presided
over the services which were opened
by tho choir Hinging Tho deepnlng
trials throng your way Other selec
tions rendered were Lord Thou wilt
hear me when I pray and 0 como
let us sing unto tho Lord The Invo
cation was offered by Elder Hamilton
G Park and Elder Andrew Jenson pro
nounced thebenediction
ELDER THOMAS ADDRESS
As a preface to his remarks Elder
Thomas said thnt the LUer lay Saints
do not believe that the canon of Scrip
ture Is full or over will be Tho Lord
will now and In the future operate
upon the minds of men by the influence
of His Spirit and Inspire them to the
end that they may progress and devel
op This life Is but n preparatory
existence n link In an endless chain
to It mortals for a hereafter Men
lived before they came to earth Just
no they will live after tho change called
death The speaker did not wish to
Imply that the Lattordny Saints be
llevo in the transmigration of the soul
Each person has his own spiritual en
tity nnd will ever have It AH are
sons anti daughters of God possessed
or attributes of Del whereby they
may prpgress from faith to faith
THE ONLY NAME
The speaker read a portion of the
fourth chapter of Acts and comment
Ing upon tho declaration of Potor con
corning the Son of God that His Is the
only name given under heaven where
by men maybe saved said that In the
letter of this passage of Scripture there
is little difference of opinion In th
Christian world but In the spirit of It
there Is a vast difference The Latter
day Saints hold thala mere belief In
Christ as a righteous man or even ns
the Son of God Is not sufficient to sal
vation but that the precepts and
commandments given by the Savior
must be followed No man can con
sistently say that he believes In Jesus
and then set himself In part against
the very teachings of the Chief Judge
Laws have bean Instituted of God for
the guidance of His children and these
must bo observed It men would place
themselves within tho pale of obedi
ence Individuals should be just as
strenuous and even more s In follow
ing divine rules and regulations as
they aro In demanding strict adh r
enee to human laws In this way only
can dissension and discord b avoided
There Is but one law as thoro Is but
one Lawgiver and Christ was the ex
amplifier of that law and only by n
complete acceptance of hilt ethics can
salvation come
TEACHINGS ARE NOT NEW
Elder Thomas then explained briefly
but plainly the fundamental principles
of the gospel In the doctrine of bap
tism he pointed out the first great dif
ference between the belief of the Lat
Uftay Saints from most of their
Christian friends Ho said If the com
mand was of God no power on earth
could alter Its modo or efficacy and he
asked who had the better of tho argu i
ment from a scriptural standpoint Tlu
Interpretation put upon It by the
Church to which he belonged was In no
wise new nor strange Tho Instance
of Pauls conversion and his subsequent
baptism was cited n going l show
that nothing contained In tho Gospel
Instituted by tho Savior and preached
by His disciples was or could be non
essential
In conclusion Elder Thomas bore a
fervent testimony to the tiuth of tho
gospel as promulgated by the Latter
day Saints Continued revelation was a
tenet of the Church and all who render
obedience to tho reriuliomonts of tho
gospel are entitled to know for them
HolvcM that Jesus Is tho Christ and arc
privileged to enjoy the varied gifts of
the Spirit
