5 Stewart moved that the regular baseness,
bills on the calendar, be laid aside, and the
Chinese prohibition bill be taken up.
Agreed to—yeas 40, nays 2 (Senators
Berry, Coke and Jones of Arkansas). The
bill was then passed without division.
The bill provides thst from and after the
date of the cxc Lange of ratifications of the
pending treaty between the United States
and China, signed on the 12th of Harch.
ISSB, it shall be unlawful for any Chinese
person, whether a subject of China or any
other power, to enter the United States ex
cept as in this hill provided.
Chinese officials, teaehers,students, mer
chants and travelers for pleasure or curios
ity shall be permitted to enter the United j
States, hot la order to entitle themselves j
to do so they shall first obtain permission
of the Chinese government or other gov- j
eminent of which they may at the time be {
