THE STBEET GRADE QURSTieN. The eatabliahment of street grades seems ' I Uv UIIBUiIHUUICUI Vi & I »<*>. r- m^vuu to be quite a bugaboo to the council. It was generally . thought that if tlie city sur ▼eyor won Id take into consideration in fixing Tht- grade of anv ene itreet, the ; requirements of all the others intersecting the difficulty would be avoided. Council- { man McCootnbs referral to the Battery street grade as an example of what dift culties ari-e whenever the establishment of; grades Is attempted. Mr. Nies/feared the ; possibility of damage suits against the city ? saould tne city essay to fix the grades of a number of streets ** proposed , He asked how raurh iand yet unplatted was included in the district referred to. Mr. Jones replied, only one small piece. ' which Mr L>«nny promises will be piatted as soon as his family is veil enough. Councilman oreeu was iu favor of allow ing the petition, so that those parties who desire to build can go on and build. The petition of Mr. i>enuy was eventually granted, only Mr. Keitze voting in the neg alive NEED OF MORE SUP^. Chairman Niesz of the committee on ha; bors and wharves stated that he had been requested by a number of men to , ask the appointment of a commit tee of three from the council to > confer suh like committee* from the ; chamber of commeree and board of trade in regard to the matter of wharves and' slips. Business men of the city were of the opinion that there were not slits enough. The mayor appointed as the committee to represent the council Messrs. Niesz, McDouald, aud burns. LIGHTING THE STREETS. When the council learned on the report, of Chairman McCoombs of the street lights committed that the bill of the Seattle Electric Light Co, for lighting the streets daring November amounting to s*£> &> included nearly $"200 for items" of repairs, there was considerable objection. The council was divided however. Mr McCoomt* favored allowing the hill so far as the amounts for lighting the streets were concerned, bat was averse to allowing the item* for re pair* until the matter had been thoroughly 2»>ok*d into. Some members of the council wanted deductions made on account of the number of lights dis covered to have been out at night accord ing to the report at tne last meeting of the chief of police. Mr. Niesz advocated doing the fair thing The bid of the (ompan> t« light the streets was read, and Mr. J. M. Kriuk, representing the com pany, was permitted to explain. He gave satisfactory rea*>ons for the lights being out, and stated that the company did not suppose, by its contract, that It was ax peeted to assume all repairs, as the lamps, etc . were the property of the city. Finally a motion was carried to a low the bill so far a* it was for lighting, and to refer the amounts claimed for rej»airs back to the S committee. FOR FIRE PROTECIION. Chief Collins of the fire department sub mitted to the council an elaborate com manleation giving a list of those who have sol complied with the fire ordinances with respect to proper fire escapes, etc , and con taining a number of good sugges tions for the prevention of fiee.
