The conditions of 1889 were extraordinary, and the devastation caused by the lire rendered necessary the im mediate construction of a great number of ' baildings and the outlay of enormous rams of money. Construction during the year, therefore, reached high water mark, the amazing number of 3,4*35 new build ing! being the result. It would have been nntura! to expect a marked ees lation of operations during the year; but It did not occur. Daring the entire season the principal streets of Seattle were lined with evidences of new construction. Brick, stone and lumber, and other build ing material everywhere interrupted traffic •f the street, and continuous passage for considerable distances was nowhere possi ble. Thousands of men were given steady employment at good wages during the en tire season. and the disbursement of siyjh peat sums of money was felt in every lino of industry. The year has indeed been one of wonderful activity. The building energy of the city has not keen confined to one part of the city. It has been manifest throughout the entire residence portion, and in the suburbs—Bal lard, Fremont, Edgwater, Latoua, Green Lake, South Seattle, Kirkland and West Seattle contributing to the total. An im mense amount of lumber was used, and •bout 35,000,000 brick. The sum ex pended for other material—stone, iron, pressed brick, etc., etc., —was immense. The character of buildings, business and residence, is creditable in the highest de- P**. It is not too much to say that no j other city of 50,000 inhabitants in the United States can make such • remarkable showing of great rows of business blocks constructed in the most •rtistio, costly and expensive manner. ■ is u large number of these buildings that would attract attention in New York. Joe sij-story Pioneer building of Hon. 11. , L-\esler is of remarkably line and noble •ppearunce; the six-story llarrisburg s block of solid stone, by Mr. W. E. Bailey, » conspicuously imposing; the office I building of Judge Thomas Burke is unex celled in style, nnish or aspect. Amongst ■ew buildings of metropolitan appearance and admirable tinish may be mentioned ; Occidental block, Starr-Boyd block, [gy stories; Safe Deposit, seven stories; ' ®l®hington block, six stories; Toklas-Sin lte*ian block, four stories; Colman block jnm finished.) tive stories; the Gilmore •jß'k. seven stories; Ilaller block, live Jesse \V. George building, six •■Tries; Butler block, hve stories; Seattle lP«tional bank (unfinished,) seven •tories, while the number of three, | tour and tive-story buildings is so numer- I ous as to forbid mention. Almost wifhout I <Sr eption they have been built in modern | *tvle. with costly and handsome exterior •fid interior tinish. Public buildings in clude the stately courthouse, prominently greeted upon the Seventh street hill. The winy hotel, nearing completion, upon Capital hill, is of striking architectural and altogether is one of the finest wildings on the PacitiC coast. As a whole, ®e character of Seattle buildings far ex those of ordinary cities of the size of v "Wile. They imprest) all visitors with the ■ metropolitan aspect of the city and are a i stantial monument of the matchless public spirit and liberality of the people of Seattle, and of their faith in its continued prosperity. Many elegant residences have been wwteii, and the usual style of dwelling I Jf neat, tasteful and convenient, pvat army of home-builders who have operating in Seattle during three pars past, are housed in quarters not in ferior to those of any city in the world. A through the residence portion of the flt J wiil pive an idea of the enormous *u»oui>t of building that has l>e€n done. taring the year progress was made in Pii'lic improvements, in the way of grad *r-2- planking and repairiug streets, in extending and enlarging the water service, in laying sewers. All this work is directly in charge of the municipality.
