Prices remain unchanged in al most every line. The hide market is probably the most active at present, as there are quite a number ol hides coming in and prices have im proved somewhat. The jobbing is also quiet now. but thero was a fair Christmas trsda. Dealers do not look for any improvement for a month or so. The only changes in jobbing price* were so:ae alight variations in the fruit market. GENERAL SHIPMENTS. "SORRY THE OLD MAX- DIED." CongrsHmsn Allen Telle Cleveland > Storj to Benefit Office Strikers. Washington City Letter. Even now, months befgre a I; j mocratic execntire enters the White House, the pol iticians with influence are in 3 j-osition to appreciate the moral of a story Con gressman Alien, of Mississippi, once told to Cleveland. The representative hal been to the White House several times in behalf of some apolicants for office, and each time he had been sent away empty handed. One day, alter a fruitless errand, he turned toward the door, and as he did so he began to laugh. "Come hack," said the president, "and tell nie why you are laughing." "No," said Mr. Allen, "I think you want to know." The president insisted, and then Mr. Alien told this story: "Down in my district," he said, "I had a client who died suddenly. I was exe cutor of his estate. About si* months after his death his son came to me and said that he was awfullv hard and lie would like to get a little monr-y, if he couid, out of the property. I iold him that he woaid have to wait unti? the year was out, ana then if the indebtedness w.is straightened out the estate would be set tled up. £?tx montns later he to see me. 'Well,' I said, when he came in. 'I cannot do anything for you today. There is some litigation over the esiaba. and I have to go into court and defend the suits. Come around when the cases ar? settled.' "Alter another long wait he fieard the decision had been given and he came again. 'Very sorry,' I said, 'brtt *he plain tiffs have taken the cases to the court of appeals.' I did not hear any more of him for two years and then he appeared. 'I am sorry," but lam hard up, h? said to me. 'and certainly would like to get some of that money.' 'Sorry,' I said.'but the court of appeals has not even beard the cases yet, aad I don't know when it will.' 'Then,' added Mr. Allen, looking the president straight in the eye, 'he turned to go. As ne reached the door h?> looked back and, weary of the long Oelay and many disappointments, he said to me; 'Mr. Alien, sometimes I am almost sorry the old man died.'" The infamona Ahlwardt, Berlin Letter. German statesmen have been more ex cited since Thursday by the prospect of Ahlwardt's appearance in tho reichstag after Christmas. Ahlwardt will *nter the reichstatr with the worst reputation borne by any deputy since the retirement of Herr Most. lie is a bankrupt of the worst kind. As head of a city school, he not on'y absorbed all the money of th<* pupils, but also made a practice of plucking their parents. He has slandered mid libeled l?erlin magistrates, and has blackened the reputation of every lawyer who has tried to save him from the consequence-- of his dishonesty. He has been in rive or six Erisons, and not a respectable house in eriin is open to him. HOTEL A ((RIVALS. THE ARLINGTON. W S Carruthers, Evrtt E H Miller, A Standel, Cope lale Ale* Keay.
